Two days after falling to UAB in a midweek contest, the Lady Hornets returned to the court Friday night to face SWAC opponent University of Arkansas Pine Bluff winning 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-16) at Lockhart Gym.
Â
"We didn't play our best volleyball tonight," said head coach
Penny Lucas-White. "Even though we got the job done, I think we could have played with a little more efficiency."
Â
The Lady Golden Lions started off the first set hot as they built a 3-0 lead. Undaunted, the Lady Hornets were able to come back to take a 19-15 lead. Behind the serve of
Briana Dorsey, ASU pulled out four quick points to take the first set 25-20.
Â
The second set saw one tie at 1-1 and the Lady Hornets taking the charge and never looking back to win the second set 25-17.
Â
Once again ASU took a quick 3-0 lead, but this time the Lady Golden Lions remained close with a final tie coming at 9-9. Dorsey took the lead on the serves garnishing two service aces after five consecutive serves. The Lady Hornets ended the set with a kill by
Ni'yesha Brown to take the third set 25-16 and the match.
Â
Brown led the Alabama State offense with 11 kills, while senior
Jamie Coleman led the Lady Hornets in digs with 16.Â
Kori Kutsch added 16 assists.
Â
"Ni had a good match tonight," said Lucas-White. "She played the way she is capable of playing and did what we have expected of her to do. As a whole we played ok, but I think we could have played a lot better."
Â
The Lady Hornets will return to action when they face the Tigers of Grambling State Saturday at 5 p.m. at Lockhart Gym. The team will be handing out candy to trick or treaters who are wearing a costume. So come out and support ASU's volleyball team for some treats!
