Volleyball Prevail Over the Tigers in a 3-1 Win;Seventh Straight SWAC Win

Junior Ni'yesha Brown looked unstoppable on Monday night as the Alabama State volleyball team dominated its match against Texas Southern at the H&PE Arena in Houston.  Brown pounded a season high 17 kills with a .293 hitting percentage as State took a 3-1 (23-25, 25-11, 25-18, 25-19) win.  She also added four block assist and one dig for the Lady Hornets (10-7, 7-0 SWAC) who picked up its seventh straight conference win and ninth consecutive overall win.

"Ni'yesha stepped up and played tremendously for us tonight, but we put in a total team effort," said Penny Lucas White.  "We played a very good SWAC team and I am just glad that we prevailed.  Kudos to Ni'yesha for a job well done tonight I am proud of her."

Both setters Kori Kutsch (23 assists) and Justus Tuiolosega (22 assists) ran an ultra-efficient offense Monday evening as the Lady Hornets hit a .242 percent as a team.  Tuiolosega added 15 digs and one service ace.

In addition to Brown, the Lady Hornets also received impressive performances against the Tigers from Briana Dorsey and Bayle Bennett.

Dorsey put down 14 kills for a .360 hitting percentage and Bennett had 12 kills and 12 digs for her second double-double of the season.

"Bri is a phenomenal leader," Lucas-White said.  "Although they were trying to triple block her, it didn't matter because she could jump out the gym.  She is so fast and smart it doesn't matter who's in front of her she finds a way to put the ball down.  My upperclassman really took our game to another level.  They came up with some big plays.  Although they picked on my freshman Bayle they all still kept their composure."

Senior Jamie Coleman averaged seven digs per set as she finished with a match and season high 29 scoops from her libero position.  The three-time Defensive Player of the week has tallied 10 or more digs in 11 matches this season.

"Kudos also goes to Jamie who had a career high of 29 digs," said Lucas White.  "This was so awesome for her and I really just appreciate her commitment and leadership on and off the court."

The Lady Hornets will look to continue its winning run as they play Prairie View Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. at the William J. Nicks Building.
