Waters is listed among
SWAC leaders in eight
categoriesMONTGOMERY – After splitting the first two games on the current three-game road trip, the Hornets will look to pick up another win as they face Alabama A&M Saturday at 6 p.m. in Huntsville.Â
The Bulldogs (8-12/4-7) are currently tied for sixth in the conference standings while the Hornets (8-15/3-8) are one game back tied for eighth.
Â
The two teams faced each other back on Jan. 16 with the Hornets coming back from a 13-point deficit to take a two-point lead with less than a minute to go. AAMU hit two free throws with three seconds left to send the game into overtime. From there the Bulldogs won the overtime affair 80-75.
Â
The Hornets will have to face three of the top players in the SWAC when they invade Elmore Gymnasium Saturday evening. AAMU's Ladarius Tabb may be the best player in the conference. He leads the SWAC in scoring averaging 20.3 points per game. He is the conference's lone player averaging 20 points each outing. Tabb is also one of the best rebounders in the SWAC averaging 7.2 per game, which has him fourth.
Â
Nicholas West is the league's second best rebounder averaging 7.7 per game. He is also fifth in the conference in scoring averaging 14.5 points per game. Point guard Rakiya Battle makes the Bulldogs offense go with his league-leading 5.2 assists per game.
Â
The Hornets have old reliable,
Jamel Waters, continuing to have a super senior campaign. The Birmingham native is averaging a career-best 15.5 points per game which is fourth in the league. He has moved into 15
th place among ASU's all-time leading scorers with 1,389 points. If he scored 46 more points during the season he will move into 14
th place, and if he can score 111 points, he will become only the 14
th player in ASU history to score 1,500 points.
Â
Tony Armstrong has made a big difference in the Hornets offense and rebounding since he entered the lineup. He is averaging 12.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He would be listed among the league leaders in both categories if he had played enough games.
Â
Corvon Butler has been playing through an injury the past three weeks, which has slowed him down a bit. He is still averaging 9.8 points per game and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds per game which has him seventh among conference leaders.
Â
The game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. and all of the live action can be heard on the ASU Hornets Sports Network. Go to bamastatesports.com for all your Game Day information.
