ASU Tennis Splits with Jacksonville State

MONTGOMERY – Alabama State hosted Jacksonville State in men's and women's tennis action with each team coming away with a win.  JSU's women won by a score of 5-2 while the men's match came down to the final two matches which the Hornets were able to pull out for the 5-2 win, their first of the season.

It was not easy for either team as the visitors came out and won the doubles point in both men's and women's action.

"We just started slow once again," Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said.  "Losing that doubles point always puts you in a position where you have to win four singles matches."

The women played without two of their top players, Patricia Regel and Marine Cartier, while two others were playing through injuries and it showed.  JSU (2-6) was able to win at two, four, five and six to put the match away.

The Lady Hornets (3-4) lone wins were at three singles with freshman Gabriela Lackova winning in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) and at one singles where Arantxia Wijngaarde came from a set down to win 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

"Playing without two of our top three players just really hurt us," Christiansz said.  "I really believe we would have won the doubles point and been able to pick up another point in singles play, but I thought we played very hard, we just came out on the short end.  We are trying to get healthy, but the injuries are really holding us back."

After falling behind losing the doubles point, the Hornets (1-3) came back out and stormed to a 3-1 lead with singles wins from Takura Mlambo, Karlo Skvorc and Szabin Pusztay.

JSU (3-7) cut the lead to 3-2 after a win at five singles, which left Patrick Cvik and Ronald Mataba on the court at six and two singles for the Hornets.

Mataba seemed to be cruising with a 5-2 lead in the second set after winning the first 7-6.  JSU's Jayrd Reese came all the way back to take a 6-5 lead and was serving to send the match into a third set.  From there Mataba seemed to find his groove once again and after breaking Reese, was able to hold serve and pull out the 7-6 second set win and give the Hornets their fourth point and their first win.

Cvik put an exclamation point on ASU's first win.  After dropping the first set 3-6, he stormed back to win the second and third sets 7-6 and 6-3.

"This was a good win for the men," Christiansz said.  "Very good effort all the way through for all of them, they were resilient after dropping the doubles point coming back and I want them to keep the momentum from this effort into next week and the rest of the season."

"We still have to get back on track in doubles play because that is an important point, but I am very proud of how they played."

Both teams will be in action on the road this week.  The Lady Hornets travel to Troy Wednesday, Feb. 17 for a match against Troy which starts at 1 p.m. Both teams will be at Alabama A&M Saturday, Feb. 20.  Those matches are also set to begin at 1 p.m.
