Tennis Teams on the Road

MONTGOMERY – The men's and women's tennis teams from Alabama State will be on the road this weekend when they play at Alabama A&M Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. and at Chattanooga Sunday, Feb. 21 also at 1 p.m.

The Hornets (1-3) are looking to become more consistent than they have been over the first four matches of the season.  The Hornets have been up and down early in the season, but are coming off a strong 5-2 win over another in-state team, Jacksonville State.

"The men have yet to put together a match where they had any real consistency," Head Coach Anuk Chrstiansz said.  "The thing they did well in the last match was come out in singles play after losing the doubles point and really concentrated on winning one point at a time."

"We really have be better prepared for doubles play as the season goes along.  We cannot continue to come out flat and lose that point.  It has cost us in the past and can cost us in future matches.  We are really working on getting better at that."

Like the men, the Lady Hornets (3-5) have played very inconsistent this season.  The main reason has been injuries and sickness as already three of the top four players in the lineup have missed matches due to either an injury or sickness.  It is a problem the coaching staff hopes will be gone the rest of the season.

"The ladies have to stay healthy," Christiansz said.  "I love their toughness and their work ethic, but we have had trouble keeping them on the court during these early matches and I think it has cost us at least two and maybe three matches."

Returning All-SWAC performer Marine Cartier has only seen action in one singles match this season while Brankica Orlovic, a returning All-SWAC doubles player, has missed time with injuries.  Newcomer Patricia Regel, who has improved with each match, has missed a couple of matches which pushes her development back some.

These road matches will be the final matches before ASU heads to Baton Rouge, La., where they will jump into conference action at the SWAC West Round Up.
