Huntsville, Ala. – The Alabama State University Men's and Women's tennis teams were both in action Saturday, as they travelled to Huntsville to take on in-state rivals Alabama A&M University.
It was a prosperous day for the Hornets and Lady Hornets alike, with the men rounding out a comprehensive victory 7-0, while the women were leading 5-1 before rain forced play to end with one singles match still on court.
"It was a good start to the day getting the doubles point for both the men and the women. Especially the women, having dropped the doubles point last time we played" said Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz after the victory. "I was confident we could get the job done in singles but I really wanted to grab that doubles point. In doubles, anything can happen because it's such a short format that I was pleased to see all the pairs come out with good energy and take the point" he said.
With Alabama A&M (1-6) only being able to field five players that left ASU only needing one doubles match to clinch the point for both the men and the women. ASU, not keen on playing tourists, came out strong and secured the point with 6-1 and 6-0 wins from
Ronald Mataba and
Adam Coyne, and
Gabriela Lackova and
Nicole Tekelova respectively.
The Hornets (2-3) were a class above AAMU and it showed during singles play. Resting important players
Takura Mlambo and
Karlo Skvorc, ASU showed strength in their depth, with quick wins at two and four to give the team an unassailable four points. Freshmen
Jose Ogea also marked the day with his Hornet debut and commemorated the occasion with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
"It was good that we can rest some of our big players, keeping them fresh for conference later, and still not miss a beat. That shows that everyone here is eager to play and fight for the team which is a great mentality for us going forward" said Christiansz.
The Lady Hornets (4-5) were equally impressive before rain interrupted play late in the day. Also playing without two of their starters, ASU quickly pulled out wins from
Gabriela Lackova, 6-0, 6-1, at two, and
Irina Cvijovic, 6-1, 6-4, at four, to clinch the match.
The two teams will spend the upcoming week training in preparation for next weekend's Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) round-up. It will be there first tournament for the conference and will give players and coaches alike a chance to scout the competition that they will face for the remainder of the season. Both the men and the women will play in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Friday, Oct. 26
