Hornets Hit Road for Final Regular Season Road Trip

MONTGOMERY – The Alabama State Hornets will hit the road looking to build on their current season-long, three-game winning streak when they hit the road this weekend for the final time during the 2015-16 regular season.

ASU (11-15/6-8) will open the weekend at Prairie View A&M (5-21/5-9) Saturday at 5 p.m.  Monday evening the Hornets will play at SWAC leader Texas Southern (14-12/13-1) at 8 p.m.

PVAMU made a mid-season coaching change and like the Hornets, seem to be playing their best basketball of the season.  They have won four of their past five games including handing Texas Southern their lone conference loss of the season.

"Everywhere you go it's going to be a tough ball game," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "We just have to come out and play good possession basketball and go in and try to set the precedent on what we are trying to do."

"We will go in and try to establish something around the basket and hopefully our guys can hit some jump shots out on the perimeter."

Going into TSU is always a tough place to play and what will make it even harder will be the Tiger crowd as the game is set to be televised nationally on ESPNU.

"It is a tough swing (Texas road trip).  Anywhere you go in this league it's just no different.  We know what we are going to be up against and it is going to take our best effort of the year to come out of Texas with a couple of wins," Jackson said.

The Hornets do seem to have found some confidence and are playing better, especially on the defensive end.  While the Hornets stats show the opposition is scoring 75 points per game, over that last six games the number has been brought down to 68 points per game.

The Hornets offense is also on the move.  ASU is now averaging almost 72 points per game which is second in the league right now.

"I think we take a lot (of confidence) into Texas because we have gotten our last three ball games here and the guys are playing with confidence and they are looking for each other and playing for each other and when you're playing like that you have a chance down the stretch," Jackson said.

With four regular season games left, the Hornets are playing for position in for the SWAC Tournament coming up in less than two weeks.  ASU enters the weekend in fifth place, but hold only a one game lead over both Prairie View and Alabama A&M and only three games separate the Hornets from Grambling State who is presently in 10th place in the league.

Both games can be heard in their entirety on the ASU Hornets Sports Network while Monday's game will also be shown live on ESPNU.  That is the reason for the odd time of 8 p.m. for Monday's game.
