BATON ROUGE, La. – While it certainly didn't have the same level of drama as the day preceding it, day two of the Southewestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) west tennis round-up will leave the players and coaches just as pleased.
Both the men and the women faced the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff Saturday morning, registering 5-2 and 7-0 wins respectively, before the women backed up again later in the day to defeat Grambling State University 6-1.
"They were good wins for the team today. The men and women both came out with the right mindset to take away the game from Pine-Bluff early and didn't let up" said head tennis coach
Anuk Christiansz post-match. "These are matches we should win but they can slip away if you come out too arrogant and we did a really good job of still being as aggressive as we were against Alcorn and Jackson yesterday" he said.
The Lady Hornets (8-5, 4-0 SWAC) were as utterly dominant as they were relentless against UAPB. On all courts, doubles and singles, not a single game was dropped against the Lady Lions in what was truly a resounding victory. "To not have any mental slips at all is big for us. We will need that strong focus going forward, especially in Montgomery for the next round-up" said Christiansz.
The Hornets (4-4, 2-1 SWAC), while not as quick, were just as dominant against a much improved Pine-Bluff team. Quick wins from
Karlo Skvorc,
Jose Ogea, and
Adam Coyne at four, six, and five respectively, gave the team the four points needed for an unassailable lead after already taking the doubles point.Â
With the result no longer in doubt, Christiansz then pulled
Takura Mlambo and
Jarred Thompson from the court with
Ronald Mataba wrapping up his match almost simultaneously. "Those two guys (Mlambo and Thompson) both had huge days yesterday playing a lot of tennis. They had some niggling injuries that weren't worth doing more harm to, so once we had the four points I let them get the extra rest. It's a long season and we need to stay healthy come the end of it" Christiansz said of his decision.
The Lady Hornets closed out the weekend by defeating Grambling, their fourth match in two days. It concluded a perfect weekend for the women who will, depending on other SWAC results, enter the second round-up in Montgomery seeded equal first at worst. "We did a good job that has put us in a good position and we will fight for that top seeding when we play the next round up back home" said Christiansz of both teams.
Both the men and the women will recover with a day or two of rest once returning home to Montgomery then go back to the practice courts before their next clash, Friday, March 4, when they host Reinhardt University at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
