HOUSTON - The two hottest teams in SWAC basketball go head-to-head Monday night as Alabama State men's basketball plays at Texas Southern.
The 8 p.m. game will be televised live on ESPNU as part of a day/night doubleheader, as the 4 p.m. women's game between the two schools will also be televised live on ESPNU. The radio broadcast on the ASU Hornet Sports Network begins at 7:45 p.m. with the American Lube Fast pregame show, and will be carried in Montgomery on Yo! 100.5 FM, with a national radio broadcast on HSRN.
The Hornets (12-15 overall, 7-8 SWAC) have won four games in a row and are 6-1 in February. Texas Southern (15-12, 14-1) has won five straight games, and has clinched at least a share of the regular season title for the second straight year.
"We'll be up for Monday night," said ASU men's basketball coach
Lewis Jackson. "We have to come out and play with a lot of intensity. Texas Southern is a very good ball club and very patient in their offense. They understand what they are trying to get accomplished, and they play that way. We have to do a good job on them defensively, and we have to be able to make shots early."
Alabama State had four starters in double figures in Saturday's 73-68 win at Prairie View.
Jamel Waters scored 15 points,
Torloft Thomas 14,
Corvon Butler 11, and
Tony Armstrong 10, with
Terrance LeFlore just missing joining the quartet with nine points. The Hornets have not trailed often during the four-game winning streak, and made 10 three-pointers against the Panthers, tying ASU's second-highest total of the season.
Texas Southern, which is undefeated at home this season, has three players ranking in the Top 10 in the SWAC in scoring, led by Chris Thomas' 14.1 points per game average. The teams met in Montgomery in January 30, with Texas Southern escaping with a 75-72 win at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
