ASU Tennis Teams Fall at UAB

Birmingham, Ala. – The Alabama State University men's and women's teams travelled to Birmingham Friday, as they faced an in-state foe in the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The match, due to predicted poor weather, was played at separate venues with the men suffering a 5-0 defeat at Lake Shore Tennis Center, and the women dropping a 4-1 decision at the George Ward Tennis Center.

For the women, the loss marked the end of their six game winning streak.  "We came out flat in doubles and the point got away from us really quickly today" said head tennis coach Anuk Christiansz.  "We responded well in singles but they are a good team and we couldn't do the things we needed to in order to get the result" he said.

For the men, the loss was their second straight defeat but the coaching staff is not ready to hit the panic button just yet.  "We played a team that's above our level and that of our conference and we competed really well" said assistant coach Richard Seman post-match.  "The doubles were good, we had good energy and fight in singles and played at a high level, we just came up against a better team.  It was encouraging play with conference just a week away" he said.

The Hornets (4-6, 2-1 SWAC) dropped the doubles point after losses at the one and three positions and came out tough in the majority of the singles matches.  With defeats to Jarred Thompson at four, Ronald Mataba at two, Karlo Skvorc at three, and Takura Mlambo at one the Hornets were down 5-0 when the coaches called off the remaining matches.

"That five nil on the scoreboard is unflattering and not reflective of the performance. Takky (Mlambo) and Karlo played great and the two unfinished (Cvik and Coyne) matches were still fighting out there and pushing their opponents to the edge" Seman said of the performance.

The Lady Hornets (9-6, 4-0 SWAC) also dropped the doubles point through defeats at the one and two positions, with identical 6-2 scores.  Defeats to Arantxia Wijngaarde, Gabriela Lackova, and Nicole Tekelova, at one, three, and six respectively, were slightly offset with Irinia Cvijovic's solitary 6-3, 6-3 victory at five.

The teams will travel back to Montgomery and have Saturday off to rest and recover, before playing host to the University of North Alabama on Sunday.  The match, a double header, is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
