MONTGOMERY – Alabama State's tennis teams were back on the court today hosting North Alabama. The two teams split in the action with the Lady Hornets defeating UNA 6-1 while the men fell to the visitors 4-3.
Â
The Lady Hornets (10-6) jumped out quick in picking up the doubles point with 6-0 and 6-1 wins at two and three. The momentum the Ladies gained in doubles action they were able to take into the singles action against UNA (4-5) where quick wins from
Marine Cartier (6-2, 6-2),
Brankica Orlovic (6-2, 6-1) and
Gabriela Lackova (6-2, 6-1) gave the Lady Hornets the four points needed to secure the win.
Â
ASU did pick up two more singles wins with
Irina Cvijovic (6-2, 6-4) winning at five singles and
Arantxia Wijngaarde winning at one singles in a super tie break (6-2, 0-6, 10-1).
Â
The win also gave the women their 10
th win of the season. It is the third consecutive season the Lady Hornets have gained double-digit wins.
Â
"Good win for the ladies today," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "I thought they played together as a team and they stepped up with great effort and put together a solid effort for the win. There are some things we need to work on to get better, but they work hard and you can see them getting better."
Â
For the fourth time this season the Hornets (4-7) lost a 4-3 match, and for the fourth time this season ASU dropped the doubles point and was unable to pull out the needed four singles victories to come back.
Â
It was not as if the Hornets did not have their chances. Down 1-0 going into singles play ASU quickly took the lead over UNA (8-2) after wins from
Takura Mlambo,
Ronald Mataba and Patrik Civk gave ASU a 3-1 lead.
Â
From there the Hornets would lose the next three singles matches, with two of those going three sets, but ASU could not pull out those three setters.
Â
"We have been preaching winning the doubles point all season and we have to get better at that," Christiansz said. "It has become a problem and we have to find a way to fix it. We have some guys that really battled today and cramps at the end hurt a couple of the guys, but it is good to see some of the players battle hard on the court."
Â
Both teams will be back in action March 18-19 during the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Round Up. ASU will host the event this year with both team's opening play Friday March 18 against Prairie View A&M at 9 a.m.
