MONTGOMERY – For the second time in three years, Alabama State will play host to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) East Round Up Friday and Saturday, March 18-19.
Â
All of the SWAC's tennis teams will be in Montgomery where the matches will be played both at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex and at the Lagoon Park Tennis Complex. All of ASU's matches will be held on campus at Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex.
Â
The Lady Hornets (10-6/4-0) are having a break out season. They enter the round up as one of the hottest teams in the SWAC as they are winners in seven of their past eight matches.
Â
What makes the season even more impressive are the wins that have come even though three of the top four players have missed several matches while nursing injuries.
Â
Marine Cartier has only played in half of the matches this season, but seems to be ready for this weekend's play.Â
Brankica Orlovic and
Patricia Regel have also missed a significant amount of matches.
Newcomer
Gabriela Lackova leads the Lady Hornets in wins with 10 while
Irina Cvijovic is right behind with nine. Regel and
Nicole Tekelova have seven wins each.
Â
The men have been up and down this season (4-7, 2-1) and enter the round up losers of three consecutive matches and four of its last five.
Â
Three of those four losses have been by 4-3 scores and in all three of those they lost the doubles point which turned out to be the difference in the score.
Â
Senior
Ronald Mataba's seven wins is a team-high while sophomore
Patrik Cvik has six wins.Â
Takura Mlambo has been playing the number one position all season and has five wins.
Â
Like the women, the Hornets have seen their fair share of playing through injuries. Senior
Adam Coyne has been nursing an injury all season and has only played in four matches, but two of those were wins in the SWAC West Round Up earlier this season.
Â
Both teams will start play at 9 a.m. Friday when they host Prairie View A&M. That will be the lone match for both teams on the opening day of action.
Â
Saturday the women will host Southern University at 9 a.m. The winner of that match may head into next month's SWAC Tournament with the top seed.
Â
Saturday at 1 p.m. the men will join the women on the court as both teams will host Alabama A&M.
Â
With Saturday being the final home match of the season, it will also serve as senior day for six ASU seniors.Â
Adam Coyne,
Ronald Mataba and
Jarred Thompson have all had a major impact in the resurgence of the men's team and leading the Hornets to their inaugural SWAC Title last season and on to their first NCAA Regional Tournament.
On the women's team
Arantxia Wijngaarde,
Irina Cvijovic and
Brianna Fairley have been instrumental as the Lady Hornets have shown tremendous improvement since their arrival on campus.
Â
The improvement in the program can be seen in the records since these three women arrived on campus. As freshmen, the Lady Hornets finished the season 4-16 overall and 2-3 in conference play. That record improved to 11-14 and 3-4 during their sophomore season.
Â
Last season ASU went 10-11 overall and 4-3 in the conference while this season their present 10-6 record overall and 4-0 conference season may lead them to one of the best seasons in the history of the program.
