MONTGOMERY – It's down to the final two games of the season and Alabama State will be looking to continue a strong second half of the season by hosting those final two games.

The Hornets (12-16/7-9) will host Jackson State (17-12/12-4) Thursday at 7:30 p.m., while ending the regular season against Grambling State Saturday, March 5 at 5 p.m.

JSU is one of the surprise teams in the conference after finishing 11-21 overall last season and 9-9 in SWAC play.  The Tigers were picked to finish sixth this season in the preseason poll.

The Tigers have used their defense to become the second ranked team in the SWAC.  They lead the conference in scoring defense (66.0), field goal defense (.395), blocked shots (3.9) and steals (8.1).

The Tigers have a balanced scoring attack led by Raeford Worsham who averages 13.3 points per game.  He is also the team's leading rebounder averaging 7.6 which places him tied for second in the conference.

Paris Collins averages 13.1 points per game and Chace Franklin has been coming off the bench for Jackson State and is averaging 12.8 points per game.

The Hornets are in the midst of turning their season around during the second half of the conference games.  ASU went 2-7 over the first nine conference games, but in the second half of the season they have gone 5-2.

Jamel Waters is coming off a 29-point performance at Texas Southern and leads the Hornets in scoring at 16.1 points per game.  He is also the team's leader in assists with 120 and in steals with 52.

Waters has had one of the top careers in ASU history and enters the final two games with 1,468 points, 14
th on the ASU all-time scoring list.  Another 32 points and he will hit the 1,500 career point's mark, becoming only the 14
th player in ASU history to reach that mark.

The Hornets have slowly become a better offensive team and are presently third in the SWAC averaging 72.3 points per game.  One player that has helped the offense has been the return of Montgomery native
Tony Armstrong.  Since he has been back on the court he is averaging 12 points per game and shooting almost 50 percent from the field.

Corvon Butler continues to be a consistent scorer for ASU.  He is averaging 10 points per game and is one of the top shooters in the conference shooting almost 60 percent from the field.

He and Armstrong have combined to help the Hornets become a force on the backboards.  Butler averages 6.1 and Armstrong averages 5.9.

The Hornets will be looking for a bit of revenge as these two teams opened conference play back on Jan. 2 in Jackson with the Tigers pulling away late for a hard-fought 68-61 win.
