AUBURN, Ala. – Alabama State could not build on their modest three-game winning streak as they fell to a hot-hitting Auburn team 11-0 at Hitchcock Field.
Â
"It's not what we expected but obviously by the score you can tell we didn't pitch well and we didn't swing the bats," Head Coach
Mervyl Melendez said. "I didn't think our starting pitching was stellar today. I thought we came in and didn't play with a lot of intensity."
Â
Auburn (11-10) had 21 hits in the game and scored runs in five of their eight offensive innings, scoring multiple runs in four of those innings.
Â
While the Hornets (13-10) hit the ball hard on several occasions, they only had two hits to show for it. Singles by
Gustavo Rios and
Oscar Prioleau were ASU's lone hits of the game.
Â
"This was probably the worst game with the bat that we have had all year," Melendez said. "Tomorrow is a new day and we have to go back and get better tomorrow."
Â
The Hornets used six pitchers in the contest with starter
Darren Kelly (1-1) picking up the loss.
Â
ASU will be jump back into conference action this weekend when they host Alcorn State. With Sunday being Easter, the two teams will play a single game Friday at 6 p.m. and a double-header Saturday with the first game set to begin at 1 p.m.
Â
"We have to put this game behind us because we have Alcorn coming in this weekend for conference games and it is important that we are ready once we get back into conference action," Melendez said.
