Game Recap: Baseball |

Camacho Leads ASU Past Alcorn State

MONTGOMERY – Joseph Camacho pitched eight innings of shutout baseball to lead Alabama State to a 10-0 run-rule shortened game over Alcorn State.

The game was stopped in the eighth inning after the Hornets scored four runs to reach the 10-run rule, but it was the pitching performance of Camacho that was the highlight of the night.

The senior remained undefeated on the season (4-0) and finished the game giving up only four hits and striking out 10 while walking none in the complete game.

"Spectacular," Head Coach Mervyl Melendez said.  "I don't know the numbers I haven't even looked yet, but I thought he kept the ball down and he made some great pitches tonight. I am very happy with his performance and he gave us eight innings and kept our bullpen rested."

Offensively the Hornets seemed to struggle at times leaving nine runners on base.  ASU (14-10/7-0) did register 13 hits on the night with Gustavo Rios and Eriq White coming through with three hits each.  Chris Biocic had two hits as did Dillon Cooper.  Biocic had three rbi and White two with Ray Hernandez and Oscar Prioleau picking up one each.

ASU was able to take advantage of four Alcorn State errors by scoring four unearned runs in the process.

The Hornets scored a run early on three walks and a hit batsman in the first inning, but did not register their first hit until the fourth inning when they were able to push two runs across the plate.

ASU scored three in the fifth, but could not score again until the eighth when they finished the game with four hits, the final off the bat of White to score the 10th run.

"I think every single game it has been a different challenge and we have to get used to the pitches they were throwing," Melendez said.  "They did a good job and we had to make some adjustments and I think the adjustments came in a little later tonight, but we left so many runners on base and we want to clean that up.  But I was happy with the performance we did have 13 hits in eight innings."

Alcorn State (4-15/3-4) used four pitchers with George Heilbig (0-5) the tough luck loser.  He pitched into the fifth inning allowing seven hits and six runs, of which only two were earned.  He had three walks, two hit batsmen and two wild pitches that hurt his chances.

Patrick McMahon picked up two of the four Alcorn hits while Justin Barna and Robert Fletcher had the other two hits.

The series will conclude with the two teams meeting tomorrow (Saturday) for a double-header.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
