Hornets End Regular Season Hosting Grambling on Senior Night

MONTGOMERY – The end of the regular season has come and Alabama State University will host Grambling State Saturday at 5 p.m.

The game will not only see if the Hornets can continue to build momentum heading into the conference tournament set for next week, it will also be the final home game for seniors Chidozie Omile, Robert Ojeah, Bobby Brown and Jamel Waters.

All four seniors will be introduced and honored right before the start of the men's game.

ASU (13-16/8-9) will be looking to continue their run during the second half of the conference season where they have gone 6-2 over their last eight games.

During that time the Hornets defense has been much improved only allowing 68 points per game, and that includes only allowing 54 points in Thursday's win over the conference's second-ranked team, Jackson State.

Offensively senior Jamel Waters continues to lead ASU.  He is fourth in the league in scoring at 15.9 points per game while also dishing out 4.3 assists per game and grabbing 4.3 rebounds per game.

He is getting plenty of help scoring the basketball as ASU is the third leading scoring team in the SWAC at 72.2 points per game.  Tony Armstrong is averaging 12 points per game and Corvon Butler is also reaching double digits at 10.

Torloft Thomas (8.4) and Bobby Brown (8.8) are also able to score and both have reached double-digits several times this season.

One of the biggest surprises during this run has been the play of Terrance LeFlore.  His presence since being inserted into the starting lineup can be seen on both sides of the ball.

In a league that is guard strong and every team has good guard play, LeFlore was asked to be a defensive stopper against some of the top players in the league.  In his six starts the Hornets are only allowing 65.6 points per game.

Offensively he has gotten better each game.  During those same six games he is averaging 11.1 points per game while shooting 51 percent from the field, 61 percent on this three point attempts and 77 percent at the free throw line.

In all during this six game span, the Hornets are averaging 75.6 points per game, exactly 10 points per game more that the opponents.

Grambling (7-22/4-13) are entering the game coming off a solid 65-58 win at Alabama A&M.  The Tigers defeated ASU 84-81 in overtime when the two teams met back on Jan. 4.  The Tigers were able to out shoot ASU 55-24 at the free throw line, making 35 of those in the win.

"It's going to be a tough ball game," Jackson said.  "They were our second conference game we played at their place.  We had a big lead and they forced overtime and we wound up losing there in overtime.  We just have to come out and be aggressive defensively and have some good offensive moving the ball around.  Hopefully we will continue to make some shots and get some assists."

"We need to attack them on both ends of the court.  Attack them defensively and attack them offensively and hopefully we can get a win right here in our last regular season home game.

The game can be seen and heard live on the ASU Hornets Sports Network.  Check Game Day Central for all your viewing and listening options at bamastatesports.com.
