MONTGOMERY – The Alabama State tennis programs have not been in action this week, but since the SWAC West Round Up last weekend, the Hornets and Lady Hornets have used the week to nurse some injuries and to continue to work on improvement leading up to the SWAC East Round Up in two weeks.
Both teams are in action Saturday as they play host to West Alabama. The matches are set to begin at 2 p.m., at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex.
Â
"We did some nice things last weekend at the round up, but we have a long way to go," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "I thought both the teams have a lot of cleaning up to do on the details in order for them to make that next step to winning the SWAC."
Â
The Lady Hornets (8-5/4-0) have won five consecutive matches, and while a couple of players are still nursing some injuries, the team is beginning to look at a contender for the conference title.
Â
Newcomer
Gabriela Lackova has a team-high eight singles wins to her credit. Returning All-SWAC performer
Irina Cvijovic,
Patricia Regel and
Nicole Tekelova all have six wins.
Â
Another All-SWAC player from last year is
Marine Cartier. She is one of the players that has missed several matches while recovering from an injury, but came back last weekend and has a 4-1 overall record, and won all four of her singles matches at the round up.
Â
The Hornets (4-4/2-1) have won four of its past five matches, with that lone loss a 4-3 nail biter to Jackson State in the SWAC West Round Up.
Â
It was an especially tough match for the Hornets as they had already played a more that three hour match that started at 9 a.m. and then had to turn around and face a Jackson State team that had not played earlier in the day and was much fresher as the match went along.
Â
"I was glad with how the men competed in the round up," Christiansz said. "Jackson had not played and we went into the match a little fatigued. I thought the guys got in there and competed, but cramps started catching up with some of the players later in the match and it was hard to overcome."
Â
Ronald Mataba enters Saturday's contest sporting a 6-1 singles record and Patrick Cvik is 4-1.Â
Takura Mlambo and
Szabin Pusztay have three wins.
Â
Adam Coyne is one of the seniors the coaching staff has been counting on, but he has missed several matches while nursing injuries. He did come back and played in the round up last weekend winning both of his conference matches.
Â
The tennis teams at West Alabama are in full swing as the men will come into Montgomery with a 3-3 record, while the women have a 4-1 record.
