NEW ORLEANS – It took a rain delay of five hours and 20-30 mph wind gusts blew during the entire day, but the semifinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tennis Tournament finally got underway.
Â
The extra time did not help the Lady Hornets as they fell in a tight 4-3 match to Jackson State. It was a back-and-forth affair as the Lady Hornets came out and won the doubles point with wins at two and three.
Â
It didn't take long for ASU (13-8) to go up 2-0 as SWAC Player of the Year
Marine Cartier won her match at two singles 6-0, 6-1.
Â
After that the Lady Tigers (9-14) won three consecutive singles matches at four, three and one to take a 3-2 lead with two matches left.
Â
Irina Cvijovic won a 6-3, 6-2 straight sets match at five to even the score and send it to the sixth singles match.
Â
Nicole Tekelova lost the first set and came back to take the second set before cramps set in for the third set which she dropped allowing JSU to move on to the championship match.
Â
"While I wish the outcome had been different, I can't put in words how happy I am of this team," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "When I sit back and look how far they have come in such a short period of time and to know this program is on the cusp of doing a lot of great things I can't help but be proud."
Â
The Hornets (7-9) didn't start the match out as well as they had hoped, dropping the doubles point at one and two doubles, but ASU did not stay down long.
Â
Once singles play started the Hornets made sure everyone understood they meant business as they won three consecutive singles matches for the final 4-1 tally.
Â
After already holding a 1-0 lead with Prairie View A&M only having five players,
Szabin Pusztay,
Karlo Skvorc and Patrik Cvic all finished in rapid succession at five, four and six singles to send the Hornets back into the SWAC Title match.
Â
In the other two singles matches, ASU's
Ronald Mataba had won his first set and was only two games away from sweeping at two singles.Â
Takura Mlambo lost the first set of his match, but had come back to win the second set and was ahead in the third when the match was stopped.
Â
"It may have been a wake-up call for the men when they lost the doubles point," Christiansz said. "I was glad to see them bounce back like they did in singles, but they need to be more focused when they come out for tomorrow's championship."
Â
The men's title match will be a repeat of last year when the Hornets defeated Jackson State for the first SWAC Title in the history of the program. JSU defeated the Hornets 4-3 earlier in the season handing ASU their lone conference loss of the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
