NEW ORLEANS – The 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tennis Championship had the same two teams as the 2015 Championship, but finished with different results as the Hornets fell to Jackson State 4-1 in the championship match.
Â
The Hornets (7-10) lost the doubles point, but not because they did not have their chances.Â
Takura Mlambo and
Adam Coyne made quick work at two doubles with a 6-1 win. JSU (8-12) evened it with a 6-3 win at one doubles which meant it came down to three doubles.
ASU led 4-2 and 5-4 the final on serve for the match. Four unforced errors opened to door for JSU to even the score at five and then went on to win the set and the doubles point 7-5, sending the Hornets into singles action needing to win four of the six singles.
Â
Once singles play started, the Hornets fell into a hole quick as the Tigers won points two and three fairly quickly at two and four.
Â
Mlambo got the Hornets into the scoring column with a straight sets win at one singles. From there it came down to play at three, five and six.
Â
Singles play at three and five had made it into the third set, but JSU was able to win the final point at six singles.
Â
"Once again it came down to not winning the doubles point," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "In almost every match this year where we didn't win the doubles point, we were not able to win the match and it came down to that again."
Â
"Our guys played hard and were focused. It just came down to Jackson State playing better than we did and you have to give them all the credit. We had another good season and the last match just did not go the way we would have liked it to."
Â
Three ASU players were named to the All-Tournament Team.Â
Takura Mlambo,
Karlo Skvorc and Szabin Puzstay all received All-Tournament honors following the match.
