MONTGOMERY – The Alabama State men's tennis team hosted Mercer in a match of two teams on a winning streak. The Hornets entered the match winners of their past two matches and Mercer came into Montgomery winners of five of their last six.
Â
This time it was the visiting Bears (9-12) that was able to keep their streak intact with a 6-1 win over ASU (6-8).
Â
The match started strong for ASU as
Patrik Cvik and
Szabin Pusztay picked up a 6-4 win at one doubles. Â But Mercer would come back with a 6-1 win at three and 6-4 win at two to pick up the doubles point.
Â
"We had our chances in doubles," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "We were up 3-1 in one of the doubles matches with a chance to win and get the point and we couldn't finish. It is really tough once you lose that doubles point."
Â
Mercer pushed the lead to 3-0 with wins at one and six singles and picked up their match-winner with a win at four.
Â
ASU's
Karlo Skvorc picked up ASU's lone win with a 6-1, 0-6, 10-5 win at three singles.
Â
"The guys played good and I am happy with the way they played," Christiansz said. "We had a few breaks go against us and we had trouble putting those out of our mind, but the effort was there and they competed very hard. I am very proud of the way they played and I continue to see them growing as a team."
Â
The Hornets will be back in action one more time before the SWAC Tournament. They will travel to Troy to face the Trojans at 5 p.m. Sunday April 10.
