Over the course of the past few weeks the Alabama State cheerleaders have been collecting dozens of children's books and donated them to Brantwood Children's Home as part of their community service event.
Â
"We really wanted to do more in the community," said head coach
De'One Gregg. "It's part of getting involved in the community and spreading the knowledge of literacy. This was more than about collecting books we talked about college and the sports that are offered on campus and how to get into college."
Â
The cheerleaders took time out of their busy cheering schedule to read to the children as well as talking to the children on the many opportunities that college offers.
Â
"The ladies discussed with the children what college life is about," said Gregg. "In addition to talking about college the cheerleaders told the children how important it is to study and go to class."
Â
This service will be an ongoing initiative for the cheerleaders to be more involved in the community.
Â
"We will be looking at doing other things, such as going to the veteran hospital and collecting toys for the needy," Gregg said. "We are trying to reach out into the community and we let people know that we just aren't cheerleaders, but we are active in the community."
Â
"It was cool to see the children's faces light up and the kids were so surprised on how the cheerleaders blended and interacted with them."
