Lady Hornets' lead slips at Troy

TROY, AL – In a similar script to last season's match with in-state opponent Troy, the Lady Hornets got off to just the type of start that they had been seeking at their opponents from the Sun Belt Conference.

Another early lead was taken.

The energy was in Alabama State's favor.

And, just like that, a spurt from Troy put them up by a 2-1 halftime edge as ASU eventually fell 4-1 on Tuesday night at the Troy Soccer Complex.

The Lady Hornets (0-3) knew the task that was ahead of them as the Trojans have displayed dominance at home over the past three plus seasons with a record of 21-1-1 on their home field.

But it was Alabama State, who displayed the aggressive play early, as it started quickly for the Lady Hornets.

Ariela Lewis scored on a beautiful run through the middle past both center back defenders on a feed from Inma Martinez to give ASU the lead in the fifth minute.

Maddie Brune and Emily Sterns struck back with goals for the Trojans (4-1) between the 16th and 18th minutes as Troy took a 2-1 lead with 26:38 remaining in the first half.

In the 58th minute, Brooke McKee dribbled through the defense and scored to make it a 3-1 Troy advantage.

The Lady Hornets threatened in the 69th minute when Ar. Lewis raced up the near sideline for some space and nearly connected with Aaliyah Lewis inside the 18-yard box.

But the ball couldn't quite find the leg of Aa. Lewis as it darted past her and out the back end line.

Lexi Kreiger also had an opening, but kicked wide left from the right side of the box.

Trojans keeper Gretchen Cagle was able to dive to make the save.

The Lady Hornets' other opportunity came when Emily LaRue attempted a shot that went wide left in the 67th minute.

Troy added to their lead when a rebounded shot off the crossbar was put in by Amber Harless in the 79th minute.

ASU goalkeeper Gianna Guyot made seven saves and played the full match in her first start of the season.

Alabama State will next travel to Jacksonville, FL, to take on Jacksonville on Friday at 7 p.m.
