Hornets look to keep momentum going at Texas Southern

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State men's basketball team will look for its second straight win on Saturday night as the Hornets visit Texas Southern in a key Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) contest in Houston, Texas.

The Hornets (5-14 overall, 3-4 SWAC) have won two out of their last three games and are averaging 68.0 points in those two wins. The Tigers (10-10, 6-1) had their six-game win streak snapped on Monday night as Texas Southern shot 33 percent (27-of-71) from the floor in a 103-89 overtime loss to Mississippi Valley State.

"There are no easy games in this conference," Alabama State head coach Lewis Jackson said. "We play the top team in our conference in Texas Southern. They have a really good team and are very well-coached. We are going to get a good couple days of practice in and look to keep what we had on Monday night going."

Alabama State is coming off a 79-65 win over Southern on Monday night as Tony Armstrong led four players in double figures. Armstrong came off the bench to score 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Rodney Simeon and Reginald Gee each had 13 points, while Torloft Thomas registered 12 points. Amir Warnock led the way on the boards with a game-high 10 rebounds, including seven on the defensive end.

The Hornets led from start to finish against Southern and shot 52.5 percent (31-of-59) from the floor in the win.

Texas Southern, which was outscored 43-8 in bench points to Mississippi Valley State, nearly had a chance to win the game in regulation as Dulani Robinson missed a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining. The Delta Devils outscored the Tigers in overtime, 17-3, to grab the win.

Kevin Scott paced Texas Southern with 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Demontrae Jefferson and Zach Lofton tallied 19 and 18 points, respectively, with Lofton pulling down six boards Jalan McCloud added 12 points, with eight of them coming from the free-throw line.

Lofton leads the conference in scoring, averaging 17.5 points a game, while Robinson is fifth in assists (3.3 apg.).
