ITTA BENA, Miss. | The Alabama State University women's basketball team ran past Mississippi Valley State in the fourth quarter, and into overtime, recording their third consecutive victory in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play with a 79-73 road victory Monday night.
 
After trailing most of the night, the Lady Hornets turned to 
Britney Wright who stepped to the line with 20 seconds remaining in regulation and calmly knocked down a pair of free throws. The two shots tied the score at 68-all, and ended an 8-2 run by Alabama State to force the overtime period.
 
Wright finished the night with a double-double for Alabama State (4-10, 3-1 SWAC) as she finished the night with 20 points and 12 rebounds. She connected on 40 (4-of-10) percent shooting from the floor and knocking down 12-of-13 free throws.
 
She was one of three players in double figures as 
Daniele Ewert finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while 
Damya Toney added 13 in the victory.
 
Alabama State finished the night shooting 41.8 (23-of-55) percent from the floor, which included 41.7 (5-of-12) percent from beyond the arc. The Lady Hornets also shot 80 (28-of-35) percent from the free throw line, while winning the rebounding battle 51-25.
 
In the extra frame, it was all Alabama State as the Hornets outscored Mississippi Valley State 11-5 that started with a three-pointer from Toney just 46 seconds into the overtime period. After Mississippi Valley State trimmed the lead to 71-70 with 3:54 remaining in the period, the Lady Hornets pulled away with an 8-1 run over a two-minute span and extend the lead to 79-71.
 
Alabama State used a three-pointer from Ewert with 3:35 to play to all but seal the victory, the first of eight consecutive points from Ewert.
 
Christiana Reed led Mississippi Valley State (5-9, 2-1 SWAC) with a game-high 30 points and six rebounds, while Ashley Beals added 16 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Lauren Elliott finished with 11 for Mississippi Valley State, who finished the night shooting 35.8 (19-of-53) percent from the floor. They also shot 21.4 (3-of-14) percent from the beyond the arc, and 72.7 (32-of-44) from the free throw line.
 
Alabama State returns to action Saturday on the road against Alabama A&M University, with tip set for 3 pm – which will conclude a three-game road trip for the Hornets.
