Lady Hornets extend streak with home victory

Alabama State runs streak to eight for the season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University volleyball team extended their season streak to eight matches with a convincing 3-0 (25-12,25-14,25-14) over Mississippi Valley State University in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play Sunday night.

"They played hard," Alabama State head coach Penny Lucas-White. "We still have to learn how to hold a standard of how we train, and at the tempo in which they play. I think we missed too many serves in the second set but the good news I got to play a lot of kids who don't get to play."

Alabama State (13-7, 6-0 SWAC) ran their streak to 27 consecutive victories in conference play, dating back to last season, and did so getting a chance to play everyone who dressed for the match.

"It was important for us to get a chance to play everyone tonight," White said. "We don't know what we are going to need and what we are going to face when we come to the roundup in four weeks, or in the conference tournament. That is the thing, our kids are so interchangeable and we are deeper than we have every been and getting a chance to play them down the stretch keeps them encouraged."

Ni'yesha Brown led the Lady Hornets with nine kills and five digs, to go along with four service aces on the night. Krysta Medearis added eight kills and six blocks, while Bayle' Bennett had five kills and Briana Dorsey five kills – giving her 700 for her career. She also added five digs and five blocks in the victory. Kori Kutsch led Alabama State with 18 assists, while Justus Tuiolosega added nine, while Asha Daniels led the team with nine digs. Alabama State finished the night hitting .287, while holding Mississippi Valley State (3-17, 1-5 SWAC) to just -.073 on the night.

"I thought it was fun," White said. "Getting a chance to play Brittany (Brown) all around, we found a way to find a way to connect with Payten (Clark) a little more and Tamara (Martin). Krysta (Medearis) had a good night. It was just fun all the way around, getting a chance to play everybody."

Alabama State returns to action Monday night at home against Alcorn State, with the match starting at 7 pm.
