HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Heading into Thursday night, there were two teams undefeated in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play, but following convincing 3-0 (25-17,25-22,25-20) victory by Alabama State University over Alabama A&M University there is only one.
Alabama State (15-7, 8-0 SWAC) ran their current winning streak to 10 consecutive matches, and they have now won 13 of their 14 matches of the season. The Lady Hornets also ran their consecutive streak of conference wins to 29 dating back to last season.
Ni'yesha Brown led the Lady Hornets with 13 kills on 33 total attacks, finishing the night hitting .212. Although she was the lone player in double figure kills for Alabama State,
Krysta Medearis finished with seven and hit .214; while
Bayle' Bennett added six and
Briana Dorsey five.
Kori Kutsch (18) and
Justus Tuiolosega (11) combined for 29 of the Lady Hornets' 33 assists, while
Asha Daniels led the team with 11 digs. Bennett added seven digs in the victory.
Meanwhile, Alabama A&M (7-14, 7-1 SWAC) was held to an attack percentage of .100 on the night, with no one climbing above six kills – Courtney Oliver and Mikel Coleman – on the evening. Meredith Sieck led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 assists, while Hela Figueriredo led the team with 12 digs.
Alabama State returns to action Monday on the road against Jackson State University, with the match beginning at 6:30 pm.
