BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Jordyn Holmes recorded her first career double-double, but it wasn't enough as Alabama State fell to Samford 58-39 on the road Sunday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.

Holmes led Alabama State (1-3) with a team-best 14 points and 12 rebounds, while
Shamyiah Smith added seven points and
Tatyana Calhoun collected seven rebounds.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half due to the defensive pressure, with Samford shooting just 25.9 and Alabama State 28.6 percent from the floor. The largest lead of the opening half belonged to Samford at nine, but Alabama State was able to battle back and end the half with a three-point play from Smith and a basket from
Arleatha Gipson to tie the game at 22-all.

Alabama State grabbed the lead to start the second half on a Calhoun basket, but Samford went on a 13-3 run to grab a 40-31 lead.

Samford (2-2) went on a 17-9 run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Alabama State was able to hold the Bulldog's leading scorer and preseason All-SoCon selection, Hannah Nichols, to just eight points in the contest.

Cassidy Williams and Samantha Fitzgerald led the Bulldogs with 13 points each, while Olivia Crozier added 11. Hannah Nichols, a preseason All-SoCon selection, was held to just eight points.

Alabama State finished 26.7 (12-of-45) percent from the floor and 22.2 (2-of-9) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 65 (13-of-20) percent from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Samford finished at 41.7 (20-of-48) percent from the floor and 30 (6-of-20) percent from beyond the arc.

The Lady Hornets will hit the road for the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic, facing Stephen F. Austin Friday in Hattiesburg (Miss.).
