MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion Alabama State University bowling team opens the 2017-18 season on the road this weekend in Houston, competing in the SHSU Track Kat Clash.

The weekend will include 22 teams, including six conference teams – including last year's SWAC runner-up, Texas Southern. The other conference teams competing over the weekend are Alabama A&M, Grambling State, Jackson State, Prairie View A&M and Southern.

Other teams competing in Houston over the weekend include Arkansas State, Stephen F. Austin, McKendree, Louisiana Tech, UMES, Maryville, North Carolina A&T, Central Missouri, Nebraska, Tulane, UAB, Delaware State, Vanderbilt, Youngstown State and host Sam Houston State.

Alabama State returns seven student-athletes from a season ago in which the school won their first-ever conference championship, including
Haley Young who finished SWAC play last season inside the top 20 in the regular season as she averaged a 178.9 in 22 matches and 3,935 pins. Young was also named to the SWAC All-Tournament team after she led the Lady Hornets with 1,055 total pins, averaging 211.0 in five matches. She was named the SWAC Most Valuable Bowler last season.

Gabrielle Hosein and
Miranda Remmel each return from last season, and finished seventh and eighth in the freshman standings. Hosein tallied 3,030 total pins and averaged 168.3 in 18 games, while Remmel averaged a 164.6 and 2,798 pins in 17 games.

Play begins Friday with five Baker games and total pins, before moving to five-person team games on Saturday. The weekend will conclude with Baker match play (best of seven).
