MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University men's tennis team, who has already clinched the top seed for the upcoming Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship, will close out their regular season one week before the tournament as they travel to Birmingham to face UAB Friday afternoon.
Alabama State (7-11, 7-0 SWAC) has won their last three matches, but has not been on the court since March 18 on the final day of the SWAC Roundup that was hosted by the Hornets. The match with UAB was originally scheduled for March 26, but was moved to weather.
Ion Efrim leads the Hornets in singles play this season, posting an 8-5 record which includes a perfect record in SWAC play (6-0). Efrim is a perfect 3-0 at number one and 5-5 at number two, with five of matches unfinished due to team results. He is also 6-1 in his last 10 matches this season.
Tomas Fernandez is 6-6 on the year, playing at three different positions although he has posted nine matches at number three singles this year.
Takura Mlambo has rotated between number one and two singles this season, posting a 5-7 record, which includes 5-5 at number one.
The team of Efrim and Mlambo lead the Hornets in doubles play, posting an 11-6 record (all at number one), with a perfect 6-0 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the team of Fernandez and
Carl-Louis Luckmann has posted a 9-6 record – including 6-1 at number three – while going 4-0 in conference play.
UAB (9-9) enters the match having lost their last three matches, and four of their last six.
The match begins at 1:00 pm at the UAB Tennis Courts.
