Lady Hornets pick up big road win over UAB

Alabama State has won five of their six matches

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Three players posted double-doubles as Alabama State University went on the road and picked up a 3-1 (24-26,25-19,25-15,25-13) non-conference victory over UAB at Bartow Arena Tuesday night.

"Intense," Alabama State head coach Penny Lucas-White said as she described the play of the Lady Hornets. "They are doing their job, they are doing it unselfishly, they are intense and they are supporting one another with a lot of energy. We call that juice and they got the juice. This team understands what it means, and they listen and apply. It was fun to coach and it was fun to strategize and go back and forth."

Ni'yesha Brown recorded her second double-double of the season with 17 kills and 14 digs for Alabama State (7-7), who won their fifth match in six tries Tuesday. Meanwhile, Bayle' Bennett recorded her first double-double of the season (second of her career) with 10 kills and 12 digs.

Not to be outdone, Kori Kutsch recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 20 assists and 14 digs.

Krysta Medearis added 10 kills, while Asha Daniels had a match-high 20 digs for the Lady Hornets.

"It was everybody," White said. "From the bench to the court, the energy that our subs brought in was phenomenal. We played well against a very good team."

After dropping the first set, the Lady Hornets picked up the pace in the second set after being down 14-10, forcing an Alabama State timeout. Out of the timeout, the Lady Hornets came out and tied the match at 15-all on a 5-1 run highlighted by a service ace from Bennett. After UAB took an 18-16 lead, the Lady Hornets used kills from Briana Dorsey, Brown and Medearis to take a 19-18 lead and from there they scored six of the final seven points for the second set victory.

They didn't stop there as they turned up the pressure in the third set as they ran out to an 8-0 lead over the Blazers using four kills (three from Brown and one from Medearis) and pair of service aces from Kutsch. After UAB trimmed the lead to as little as five at 18-13, Alabama State took a timeout and came out of the timeout with extending the lead to 22-15 on a Bennett kill and forced a Blazer timeout. The Lady Hornets scored the final three points on a Justus Tuiolosega (one of her 15), a block from Payten Clark and a kill from Bennett to end the set.

The Lady Hornets ended the match in the fourth set as they battled from behind and took the lead 22-21 on an error by UAB. After a UAB timeout, Clark came out and recorded a solo block to extend the lead to a pair before UAB was able to trim it to one and fight off on match point. However, the Lady Hornets were just too tough as they forced another Blazer error on the final point to claim the four-set victory.

Alabama State opens conference play at the SWAC Roundup, hosted by Texas Southern University. The Lady Hornets open play Friday against Southern at 3 pm, followed by Grambling State at 5:30 pm.
