HOUSTON, Texas | The Alabama State University volleyball team extended their winning streak to five consecutive matches with a pair of wins over Southern University and Grambling State University at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Roundup at Texas Southern University Friday night.

Alabama State (9-7, 2-0 SWAC) has now won seven of their last eight matches, and extended their conference-winning streak to 22 consecutive matches with the pair of victories.

The Lady Hornets battled from behind to force their opening match with Southern to five sets, winning the match 3-2 (20-25,25-16,28-30,25-18,15-11) to open play in the roundup behind the play of sophomore
Bayle' Bennett. Bennett finished the night with a match-high, and career-high, 20 kills and recorded her second consecutive double-double as she recorded 14 digs in the victory. She was one of three players in double figures in kills and digs on the night for the Lady Hornets.

Ni'yesha Brown and
Briana Dorsey each finished with 11 kills, with Brown adding eight digs and Dorsey three blocks on the night.
Krysta Medearis finished with nine kills, while
Payten Clark added eight.
Justus Tuiolosega led Alabama State with 28 assists, while
Kori Kutsch added 24 assists and finished off another double-double with 11 digs. Â
Asha Daniels finished with 12 digs for Alabama State in the opening victory over Southern (0-11, 0-1 SWAC).

In the nightcap, Alabama State was able to pull away from Grambling State for a 3-0 (25-11,25-19,25-16) victory behind the play of Bennett.

Bennett ran her two-match, day one total to 31 kills as she finished with a match-high 11 on 17 total attempts, finishing the night hitting .529. Dorsey finished with nine kills and hit .600 in the three sets. Kutsch led the Lady Hornets with 19 assists and nine digs, while Tuiolosega finished with 13 assists. Daniels finished with nine digs, while
Kayla Torres added eight.

The Lady Hornets held Grambling State (5-12, 1-1 SWAC) to just .048 hitting on the night in the win and did not allow a single player to get into double digits in kills.

Alabama State returns to action Saturday against Prairie View A&M at 10 am, followed by Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 7 pm.
