Lady Hornets finish opening weekend of conference play undefeated

Alabama State claims their seventh straight victory this season with Sunday win

HOUSTON, Texas | Alabama State University sophomore Bayle' Bennett helped lead Alabama State to a come-from-behind 3-1 (18-25,25-23,25-19,25-14) victory over Texas Southern University in their final match of the SWAC Roundup Sunday morning.

Alabama State (12-7, 5-0 SWAC) claimed their seventh consecutive victory this season – all on the road – and extended their conference-winning streak to 26 consecutive matches, dating back to last season.

Bennett led the Lady Hornets in four out of five matches in kills this weekend, and ended the day against Texas Southern with 14 kills on 44 total attempts. She also recorded seven digs, while Ni'yesha Brown added 13 kills and seven digs. Kori Kutsch led the Lady Hornets with 44 assists (out of 50 total) and nine digs, while Asha Daniels set a career-high with 27 digs in the victory. Kayla Torres added 11 digs and Brittany Brown 10 for Alabama State, as the Lady Hornets held Texas Southern to a .104 attack percentage in the match.

After dropping the first set to Texas Southern (5-7, 3-2 SWAC), the Lady Hornets battled back in the second set after Texas Southern tied the set at 18-all. An attack error by the Tiigers and a kill from Brown gave Alabama State a 20-18 lead, and the Lady Hornets extended the lead to 24-20 on another Brown kill. After Texas Southern fought off three match points, Alabama State took advantage of a Texas Southern error for the set victory.

With the match tied at 1-all, Alabama State fell behind 7-3 early but battled back as they went on a 10-3 run to take a 13-10 lead midway through the third set. After the lead was trimmed to 13-11, Alabama State went on a 7-1 run to take a 20-12 lead behind the serves of Brown and a pair of kills from Brown and one from Krysta Medearis. Texas Southern trimmed the lead to 22-16, before Alabama State was able to put the set away on a pair of kills from Bennett for a 2-1 overall lead.

The final set belonged to Alabama State from start to finish, as they trailed just one time (2-1) and went on an 18-6 run to take an 11-point lead midway through the set. Texas Southern was able to get within single digits twice, until Medearis gave Alabama State a match point, and the Lady Hornets took the match on a Texas Southern error.

Alabama State returns to action October 1 at home against Mississippi Valley State at 5 pm.
