Lady Hornets drop non-conference match to South Alabama

Briana Dorsey and Ni’yesha Brown record 13 kills each

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State University dropped a three-set thriller to the University of South Alabama, 3-0 (22-25,17-25,29-31), at Lockhart Gymnasium Tuesday night.
 
Briana Dorsey, the reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Week, and Ni'yesha Brown each collected 13 kills to lead Alabama State (2-5) on the night. Kori Kutsch added 24 assists, while Justus Tuioloesga added 11 off the bench.
 
Defensively for Alabama State, Bayle' Bennett led the way with eight digs, while Kutsch and Tuiolosega each added seven in the loss. The Lady Hornets picked up six blocks on the night, with Dorsey picking up a pair of solo blocks and Payten Clark three block assists.
 
South Alabama (3-3) was led by Kristina Alabastro with 10 kills, while Ashlyn Roberts and Parker Harrell picked up 15 assists each in the Lady Jags' win. Abby Baker picked up 12 digs for South Alabama.
 
Stat of the Night
  • Briana Dorsey finished the night with 13 kills, and hit .600 through the three sets with just one error.
  • Ni'yesha Brown finished the night with 13 kills and hit .250; while Payten Clark finished with seven kills and hit .500 on the night.
  • Alabama State recorded six total team blocks to South Alabama's four on the night.
 
How It Happened
  • Alabama State dropped the first set 25-22 but battled back after trailing by as many as four early on. The Lady Hornets tied the match for the first time at 10-all, and took their first lead of the match at 15-14 in the opening set on a service ace by Justus Tuiolosega.
  • South Alabama came to take the lead and pushed it to 18-16, before Alabama State came back and tied the opening set at 19-all and again at 20-all on a kill from Briana Dorsey – before South Alabama scored five of the final seven points to win the set and take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Lady Hornets dropped the second set 25-17 as they battled back from an early deficit in the set, to head to the locker room down 2-0.
  • In the third and final set, Alabama State got out to an early seven-point advantage at 15-8 on a kill by Krysta Medearis. After South Alabama battled back to tie the match at 16-all, the Lady Hornets took the lead back at 17-16.
  • From that point, the two teams traded points until Dorsey put the Lady Hornets up by three on a pair of occasions – the last at 23-20. After South Alabama came back to tie the set at 23-all, a kill by Medearis was ruled out by mere inches before Dorsey tied it back up at 24-all.
  • The two teams continued to trade set points, with Alabama State facing match point two times and fought both off before South Alabama was able to put the match away with a 31-29 victory in the third set.
 
Up Next
  • The Lady Hornets will have a two days off to prepare for the ISTAP Collegiate Cup which takes place inside Lockhart Gymnasium on Friday and Saturday. The Lady Hornets will open play with Southeastern Louisiana at 7 pm Friday.
