MONTGOMERY, Ala. | For the first time since 2006, Alabama State University and Troy University will meet on the gridiron as they will play Saturday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy.
Troy (0-1), coming off an opening week loss to Boise State, leads the all-time series with Alabama State 13-2. The pair of wins from the Hornets came during the 1991 championship season (22-19) and the 1989 season opener (16-13).
Alabama State (0-1) comes into the contest off a 14-6 loss to Tuskegee in their season opener, a game in which the Hornets piled up nearly 400 yards of total offense led by SWAC Newcomer of the Week
Kobie Jones. The redshirt freshman finished the night 20-for-38 for 173 yards and a touchdown in the loss, and also ran for 46 yards on 11 carries. Senior
Darrel King led the Hornets on the ground with 87 yards on 10 carries, while
Alex Anderson added 54 yards.
The defense held Tuskegee to just one offensive touchdown on the night, and gave up just 53 yards on the ground to a team that averaged nearly 150 yards per game last season. They held the Golden Tigers to just 192 yards of total offense on the night, with 18 different players recording a tackle. The Hornets also recorded five tackles for loss and two sacks on the night against Tuskegee.
Meanwhile, the Trojans – who were picked to finish second in the Sun Belt Conference – enter the game following a 24-13 loss to Boise State. In that contest, Boise State took advantage of cost Trojan miscues to build a lead and hold off Troy. The Trojans committed three turnovers, eight penalties and allowed the Broncos to average 41.8 yards on kickoff returns and 24.8 yards on punt returns.
Brandon Silvers was 17-of-33 for 139 yards through the air for the Trojans in the loss, throwing one interception. Meanwhile, Jordan Chunn was held to 41 yards on 11 carries, while Jamarius Henderson added 37 yards for the Trojans. Defensively, the Trojans were on the field for nearly 36 minutes in the loss, with Melvin Tyus coming up with seven stops and Sam Lebbie six.
The game at Troy will be the only road game until October for the Hornets, who are scheduled to play four of their first five games at home. Troy and Alabama State will kick off at 5:04 pm on ESPN3, and the game can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network.
