MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Four players scored in double figures for Alabama State, but the Lady Hornets fell to Alabama A&M fell 78-69 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Saturday.
Kenya Pye,
Keimeshia Walker, Tatayna Calhoun and
Amber Hunt each scored 12 points for Alabama State (4-12, 2-3 SWAC), while Courtney grabbed a career-high six rebounds. Walker and Hunt combined for 24 of the 30 points off the bench for the Lady Hornets.
"We didn't do a good job of guarding their guards and defending the paint," head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said. "We've got work to do and we will definitely be going back to the drawing board and watching film. I am still optimistic but we have to work to continue to keep winning in the SWAC."
Alabama State shot 41.7 (20-of-48) percent from the floor and 50.0 (8-of-16) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 65.6 (21-of-32) percent from the free throw line.
Lauren McKee led all scorers with 27 for Alabama A&M (8-8, 3-2 SWAC), while Nigeria Jones added 14 points and four rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.
In the third quarter, Alabama State was able to cut the deficit to four after Walker nailed two free throws and converted on a steal and layup. The Bulldogs answered back with a 7-1 run to close the quarter, leading 54-44.
Alabama A&M finished the night shooting 43.1 (25-of-58) percent from the floor and 52.9 (9-of-17) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 82.6 (19-of-23) percent from the free throw line in the win. The Lady Hornets held a 30-19 advantage in bench points in the game. They also forced A&M into 12 turnovers and turned those into 10 points.
Alabama State will return to action January 20 when they face Southern University. The game can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network beginning at 2:45 pm with the pregame show.
