Alabama State heads west for SWAC Roundup

Lady Hornets are currently ranked 22nd in national poll

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State, the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion, heads west this weekend to take part in the SWAC West Roundup held at USA Bowl in Dallas.

The 22nd-ranked Lady Hornets enter the tournament after a 12th-place finish at the Mid-Winter Classic, which featured the top five teams in the country, along with several other ranked teams. Alabama State was able to come away from the tournament with four victories, including a victory over fifth-ranked Sam Houston State.

Alabama State (32-19) has finished in the top three in two of their four tournaments so far this season, including a second place finish at the JSU Sonic Boom Invitational back in November. So far this season, the Lady Hornets are 16-4 against conference competition after facing six different opponents through the first four tournaments this season.

The Lady Hornets have already faced conference foes 25th-ranked Prairie View A&M, Grambling State, Southern, Texas Southern, Jackson State and Alabama A&M; while dropping matches to Prairie View A&M, Southern and Texas Southern thus far this season.

The tournament will not follow the format that the first four tournaments have followed, as each day will be traditional play. The tournament will begin on Friday at 10 am with five traditional matches, and resumes Saturday with the same schedule. The final day of the tournament, Sunday, will begin at 9 am and feature four matches.

The schedule will be determined Friday morning as teams draw numbers prior to play beginning.
