MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State, the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion, returns to action with a pair of matches in the state this weekend.
The Hornets will open the weekend at home against Mercer (3-1) Friday afternoon, who is on a three-match winning streak after dropping their season opener. The two teams met last season, with Mercer winning a thrilling 4-3 match. In that match, Alabama State picked up wins by
Ion Efrim and
Tomas Fernandez in singles' action. They also picked up a doubles victory by Fernandez and
Carl-Louis Luckmann.
The match with Samford was originally scheduled for Sunday, but has been moved due to projected weather pattern that will affect central Alabama with rain this weekend.
Alabama State (0-1) travels to Samford (0-1) Saturday, a team they played in the season opener last season. The Hornets dropped that match, but picked up a win from
Szabin Pusztay at number five singles slot.
Samford enters the match after falling to Alabama, 7-0, in their season opener.
The Hornets face Mercer on Friday at 1:30 and Samford on Saturday at 1 pm. Admission is free to all home tennis matches.
