GRAMBLING, La. | Alabama State led early but struggled offensively in the second half, falling to Grambling State 93-71 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play Wednesday night at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Ziara Doe and
Keimeshia Walker led Alabama State (2-11, 0-2 SWAC) with 15 points, combining to knock down 15 free throws – including 11-of-14 by Doe.
Mya Millner finished with 12 points, while
Tatyana Calhoun had 10 for the Lady Hornets.
Alabama State finished the night shooting 45.8 (22-of-48) percent from the floor and just 13.3 (2-of-15) percent from the beyond the arc. They also shot 73.5 (25-of-34) percent from the free throw line in the loss.
Meanwhile, Shakyla Hill led Grambling State (5-8, 2-0 SWAC) with a quadruple-double as she finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals. Deja McKinney led the Lady Tigers off the bench with 20, while Monisha Neal and Jazmine Torian added 12 each.
Grambling State shot 47.1 (33-of-70) percent from the floor and 45.8 (11-of-24) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 72.7 (16-of-22) percent from the free throw line.
Alabama State started the game on an 8-0 run to take a 14-8 lead before Grambling State converted on 5-of-13 three pointers to end the first quarter with a 21-18 lead. Grambling State opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run before Mya Milner scored six consecutive points to put the Lady Hornets within five (33-28). In the second quarter, however, Grambling State outscored the Lady Hornets 19-15, taking a 40-33 advantage at the break.
The Lady Hornets return home for the next three games and continue conference action against Mississippi Valley State on January 6. Tip is set for 3:00 pm, with pregame on the Hornet Sports Network beginning at 2:45 pm.
