Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State won three singles matches Wednesday afternoon against Point University, before falling to the Skyhawks 4-3 in non-conference action at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
Alabama State (0-4) dropped two of three doubles matches, dropping the doubles point to the Skyhawks to fall behind 1-0. The number three team of
Tomas Fernandez and
Carl-Louis Luckmann won the lone doubles match of the day for Alabama State, defeating the team of Patrick Tobacco and Clayton Godfrey, 6-2.
The doubles point came down to number two doubles after the teams split the first two matches, before Point claimed a 7-5 victory over the Alabama State team of
Alejo Calvis and
Andrej Trajkovski.
"I told the guys before the match how important for us to win the doubles point because you just don't what is going to happen," Alabama State head coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "We have two guys playing injured and they tried to finish the matches to help the team, but it was difficult for them in singles. We just have to continue to play each match and approach each match the same way, beginning with doubles."
Point claimed the first two singles matches to take an overall 3-0 lead to put the Hornets' on the verge of defeat; however, Alabama State got a win at number five when Calvis claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sam Blackburn to trim the lead to 3-1. The lead was trimmed to 3-2 when Efrim won at number one singles over Joe Klokow 6-2, 6-1.
However, moments after the Efrim victory, Point sealed the win with a 6-4. 6-3 victory by Clayton Godfrey over Alabama State's Trajkovski. After the match was decided, Luckmann came back to win his match at number four singles after dropping the first set 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Alabama State returns to action Friday morning against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg (Miss.), with the match starting at 10 am.
