MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State honored four seniors prior to kick in their Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match against Grambling State, but fell 1-0 at the ASU Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon.
"I thought we played fairly well," Alabama State head coach
Jodie Smith. "I think this is the second game that the outcome was out of our control, but we need to just regroup and continue to play better."
The match remained scoreless until Grambling State (11-7, 8-1 SWAC) struck after intermission when Kaylee Holt was able to convert a penalty kick into a goal in the 73rd minute.
Alabama State (5-10, 5-4 SWAC) had several opportunities off of seven total shots, including two by
Shyann Cordova that were on target but just high.
Goalkeeper
Gianna Guyot finished the night off with six saves in the loss.
Alabama State will conclude the regular final season against rival Alabama A&M on Thursday at 6 pm. Admission at the ASU Soccer Complex is free.
"We will have to come to play, they have improved very much," Smith said. "It will be a tough one, but beating Alabama A&M and defending our home field is important to us."
