HOUSTON, Texas | Alabama State got a goal from forward
Birgit Rijnders in the first half of Sunday's match against Texas Southern, but it was not enough as the Lady Hornets fell 4-1 to the Lady Tigers in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action on Sunday.
Â
"We definitely did not match their energy today," head coach
Jodie Smith said. "We struggled to possess the ball, especially in the midfield. We need to learn from this loss and turn our focus on Howard next week. "
Texas Southern (5-5-1, 5-0 SWAC) struck first when Gia Hodges was able to score her first goal off of an assist from Kayla Martinez in the 13th minute. Ten minutes later, Begona Bravo extended the Tigers' lead to 2-0.
Â
Alabama State (4-8, 4-2 SWAC) edged closer in the 27th minute on the goal from Rijnders but was unable to even things up as Texas Southern added to its lead in the 50th and 53rd minute, respectively, when Bravo and Lamauriel Johnson scored three minutes apart to push the lead to 4-1.
Â
Goalkeeper
Gianna Guyot hauled in eight saves in the loss.
