MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Fresh of a 34-point victory Sunday night, Alabama State returns home for their final non-conference home game of the season Wednesday night against Birmingham-Southern.
Alabama State (1-2) scored 97points in their last contest, a mark reached just twice since the 2016-17 season – one in a loss to Savannah State on the road last season, and once against Alabama A&M in a three-overtime thriller two years ago. The Hornets used a night in which they shot 47.7 (31-of-65) percent from the floor and 74.4 (29-of-39) percent from the free throw line to pull away from LaGrange.
The Hornets had four players in double figures in the contest, the most in a game this season, and had a pair of players –
Reginald Gee and
Jacoby Ross – each score 20-plus points. Several new faces got in on the action as well for the Hornets as
AJ Farrar came off the bench and scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds in just nine minutes of action.
Through the first three games of the season, Alabama State ranked in the top 10 nationally in blocked shots after a 10-blocked shot performance against LaGrange. The Hornets are currently seventh in the nation with 18 total blocks, just five behind the nation's leader – Baylor – with 23. The Hornets are also in the top 50 in blocked shots per game, while Ross is currently ninth in the nation in three-pointers with 11 through three games.
Ross leads Alabama State, averaging 17.3 points per game while shooting 43.6 (17-of-39) percent from the floor. He is also perfect from the free throw line through three games, hitting all seven of his shots from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, Gee is averaging 16 points per game, while shooting 45.2 (14-of-31) percent from the floor. He is also closing in on 1,000 career points for the Hornets, sitting at 796 career points just three games into his junior season.
Meanwhile, Birmingham-Southern (2-0) has three players averaging double figures through their first two games of the season, led by Zachary Allison at 19.0 points per game. He is joined in double figures by Ben Spence at 17.5 per game, and Troy Stephens at 10.0 points per game.
Tickets are $10 for general admission and $15 for reserved. The game will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network, with pregame starting at 6:45 pm.
