Lady Hornets come up short against Prairie View A&M

Ziara Doe finishes with career-high 16 points in loss

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | A valiant effort came up short as Alabama State dropped a 69-63 decision to Prairie View A&M in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) contest Saturday afternoon at William J. Nicks Arena.
 
Ziara Doe led Alabama State (8-18, 6-9 SWAC) with a career-high 16 points on 46.6 (7-of-15) percent shooting from the floor and seven rebounds off the bench. Tatyana Calhoun also finished in double figures with 14 for the Lady Hornets, and added nine rebounds, while Kayla Stephens collected a career-high 13 rebounds and scored seven points.
 
Alabama State trailed by 13 in the first half before Doe scored eight unanswered points to cut the lead to 36-29 going into halftime. The Lady Hornets started the second half on a 6-0 run to come within one, 36-35, before Prairie View A&M answered back and were able to solidify the win.

The Lady Hornets finished the night shooting 39.6 (21-of-53) percent from the floor, 57.1 (12-of-21) percent from the free throw line and 14.3 (1-of-7) percent from beyond the arc.
 
Meanwhile, Shala Dobbins led Prairie View A&M (12-14, 10-5 SWAC) with 20 points, with most of her damage coming at the free throw line as she finished 10-of-11 on the night. She was joined in double figures by Dominique Newman with 15 and Talisha Presley finished with 14.
 
Prairie View A&M shot 41.5 (22-of-53) percent from the floor and 30.8 (4-of-13) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 80.8 (21-of-26) percent from the free throw line.
 
Alabama State will remain in Texas as they take on Texas Southern on Monday night at 5:30 pm, with live audio coverage provided by the Hornets Sports Network beginning at 5:15 pm.
