MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State hits the road for the third consecutive game, looking for their consecutive victory and a season sweep of Alabama A&M as they face their in-state rival at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium Saturday evening.
Â
Alabama State (5-18, 5-6 SWAC) currently sits sixth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) standings, and is just one game out of fourth place overall in the conference – which is held by Prairie View A&M currently. The Hornets are coming off a road upset of conference-leading UAPB Monday night, just the second conference loss of the season for the Golden Lions.
Â
The Hornets are looking for the season sweep of Alabama A&M after defeating the Bulldogs, 70-67 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome back on January 13. The Hornets built a big lead in that contest – a 23-point first half lead – before holding on for the victory, which at the time was their second win in three contests.
Jacoby Ross led Alabama State in scoring in that game with 20 points, including 15 in the first half; while
Reginald Gee added 17.
Branden Johnson recorded a double-double in the win with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Â
Gee leads Alabama State in scoring at 14.6 points per game this season, which has him seventh in the conference in that category. He is also currently fourth in the conference in free throw shooting at 81.3 percent.
Â
Meanwhile, Ross is averaging 12.2 points per game and is fifth in the conference in free throw percentage at 79.7 percent. He is also fourth in the league in three-point field goal percentage at 40.2 percent, while fellow point guard
Gene Davis is eighth in the conference in assists at 2.2 per game.
Â
Johnson is second in the conference in field goal percentage at 64.0 percent, while also being fourth in rebounding (6/7 per game) and second in blocked shots (1.5 per game).
Tobi Ewuosho is 10th in the conference in steals (1.0 per game) and
Fausto Pichardo is ninth in blocked shots (0.7 per game).
Â
The game is set to tip at 5 pm and will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network.
