MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State was held to seven hits as Morehead State swept their midweek series with a 9-4 victory over the Hornets Wednesday afternoon.
Morehead State (13-9) scored a run in each of the first, second and fifth innings to take a 3-1 lead over Alabama State before a three-run home run by Hunter Fain extended the lead to 6-1 after six. The Eagles added three more in the top of the ninth to extend their lead to 9-2.
Ivanniel Vazquez (1-3) suffered the loss for Alabama State, working 5.1 innings and allowing five runs – all earned – off of five hits, while striking out three on 111 pitches. Alex Castro made an appearance out of the bullpen and went 3.2 innings, allowing four runs – all earned – off five hits with four strikeouts.
Alabama State (12-10) got on the board in the second to trim the Morehead State lead to 2-1 after a pitch hit
Hunter Allen. He moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Noel Cheneau, before moving to third on a
Ray Hernandez fly out to right. He would come across to score on an RBI single from
Joshua Dunson.
They got on the board again in the eighth after
Cristopher DeGuzman drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a walk to
Ricky Perez. Both runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch, and DeGuzman would score on an RBI groundout off the bat of
AJ Gardner to trim the deficit to 6-2 at the time.
After Morehead State scored three in the top half of the ninth inning, the Hornets sent seven batters to the plate in the bottom half of the frame. After pinch hitter
Cage Cox drew a leadoff walk, he was called out on a double play off the bat of
Santiago Garcia leaving the Hornets down to their last out. However, the Hornets were able to score two runs with a pair of outs when Hernandez and
Chris Lewis came around to score for the final margin.
Hernandez finished the day 2-for-4 with a run scored, while five other players each picked up a hit in the loss. Gardner, Dunson and
Oscar Prioleau each picked up a run batted in for the Hornets.
Alabama State is off this weekend in conference action and returns to play against Troy at Riddle-Pace Field next Tuesday with game time set for 6 pm.
