MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State pounded out nine hits, running by Jacksonville State in their regular season home finale 6-2 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Tuesday night.
Alabama State (22-19) jumped on the board early against the Gamecocks with a run in the third and another in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. The Hornets used a Jacksonville State error, one of four by the Gamecocks, to get their first run of the game as
Cristopher DeGuzman was able to come across the plate. They added another in the fourth in an RBI single by
Hunter Allen in the fourth.
Gustavo Rios pushed the lead to 4-0 when he singled to right field to score
Ray Hernandez and Estrada, before they pushed the lead to 5-0 when Estrada launched a solo home run to right center. Hernandez singled to left field to score
Yamil Pagan in the bottom of the sixth for the final run of the game for the Hornets.
Jacksonville State (22-19) was able to get on the board in the seventh inning when Alex Strachan hit a two-run home run in the right center field for the final margin.
Rios, the reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hitter of the Week, finished the night 2-for-4 with a run scored, while
Joshua Dunson added a pair of hits in the win.
Chase Laney (5-1) picked up the win, working four innings of relief and giving up a pair of runs off of five hits.
Terrell McCall recorded his fourth save as he working one inning of scoreless with a pair of strikeouts.
Alabama State returns to action this weekend on the road in Tallahassee (Fla.) in non-conference action, opening a three-game set with Florida A&M on Friday. The game is set for 4 pm, and can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network.
