Alabama State slides past Florida A&M

Darrius Wright allows just one hit through six innings of work

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Alabama State rode the arm of Darrius Wright, and used a combined seven hits from Noel Cheneau and Cage Cox to grab an 8-2 series-opening victory over Florida A&M Friday night at Moore-Kittles Field.

Darrius Wright (7-1) held Florida A&M to just one hit through six innings of work, a single from Jordan Curtis in the fifth inning, while striking out a pair of Rattlers. He was able to work out of a pair of jams as he walked eight in the win. Channing Walker came on in the seventh to work the final three innings to record his first career save with three strikeouts.

Meanwhile, at the plate Cheneau finished 4-for-5 on the night as he picked up hits in his first four plate appearances – including a pair of doubles. Cox finished the day 3-for-5 on the day with three singles, while Gustavo Rios finished with a pair of hits.

Alabama State (23-19) got on the board in the second inning after Cox led off with a single and was pushed to third on Cheneau's first double of the day. He would later score on an RBI groundout by Joshua Dunson for a 1-0 lead. The Hornets extended the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth when Hunter Allen reached on an infield error and stole second, as he came around to score on an RBI double by Cheneau. The junior was knocked in on an RBI single by Joseph Estrada for a 3-0 lead.

The Hornets pushed the lead to 4-0 with a single run in the sixth as Cheneau reached on an infield single and stole second. He would score as an errant throw from catcher Jacky Miles, Jr. went into center and was mishandled by Willis McDaniel.

The lead grew in the seventh when Rios drove home Yamil Pagan to give the Hornets a 5-0 lead before Florida A&M (19-23) was able to get on the board in the bottom half of the inning  following a pair of walks. The Hornets added three more runs in the eighth on RBIs from Hunter Phillips and Pagan, before Florida A&M added a single run in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin.
