TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Alabama State dropped the series finale 5-2 to Florida A&M Sunday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field, their final non-conference series of the season.
Alabama State (24-20) fell behind early as the Rattlers put on a run on the board in the first and third innings, before the Hornets came back with a pair of runs of their own in the sixth to tie the game at 2-all.
The Hornets used a one-out single from
Joseph Estrada, one of four hits for the Hornets against three Florida A&M (20-24) pitchers, to get things started in the inning. He was forced out at second on a ball hit by
Yamil Pagan straight up on the infield that landed at the feet of Florida A&M catcher Jacky Miles, Jr., before he was pushed to second on a two-out walk to
Ray Hernandez.
Alabama State loaded the bases when
Gustavo Rios drew a two-out walk, and the Hornets got on the board when
Cage Cox battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk and bring in Pagan. Alabama State added another run when
Hunter Allen drew a walk to bring in Hernandez to tie the game.
Florida A&M was able to add a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh off
Alexander Castro (0-3), who came in to work four innings in relief of starter
Gage Dollar and was one of four pitchers used on the day for Alabama State. He allowed two runs – both unearned – on three hits with six strikeouts.
Allen was the lone Hornet to pick up multiple hits on the day, finishing 2-for-3.
Alabama State returns to action next weekend on the road in their final Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series of the season, facing Mississippi Valley State beginning Friday at 4 pm. The entire series will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network.
