Atlanta, Ga. | Despite dropping two games at O'Keefe Gymnasium on the final day of the Hyatt Regency Invitational, the Alabama State women's volleyball team can hold its head high after a gritty performance in a 3-0 loss to Wofford (28-30, 17-25, 24-26).
The Lady Hornets (3-4) had a golden opportunity in the opening frame, leading most of the way before losing set point on four occasions and eventually dropping a heartbreaker, 28-30.
A close battle in the second set gave way to a dramatic final frame. Down 17-21, Alabama State roared back to force extra points. The set may otherwise have turned out differently if not for four service errors in the final period. The Lady Hornets finished with 14 total service errors.
Krysta Medearis and
Taira Cottingham led the way with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while
Candace Martin put away six of her 14 attacks and had three blocks.
Kori Kutsch posted a double-double with 31 assists and 15 digs. It was the first contest of the tournament that the Lady Hornets had more digs than their opponent (54-50).
Alabama State hosts its first home match of the season at Lockhart Gymnasium Tuesday, September 4 versus UAB. First serve is at 7 pm.
