MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University women's soccer team could not overcome a quick start by Mercer University Friday night, falling to the Bears 7-0 at home.
Mercer (5-3-1) scored the first goal of the match in the fourth minute as Brie Pavol was able to connect off a corner kick from Abigail Zoeller. The lead was extended to 2-0 in the sixteenth minute when Pace Stephenson took a pass from Pavol that she was able to put in the back of the net. Jasmine Pence was able to beat the Lady Hornets' defense for the final goal of the first half in the 30
th minute.
The Bears were able to extend the lead in the second half with back-to-back goals from Stephenson in the 48
th and 50
th minute of action. The final two goals came just seven minutes apart when Caroline Smith and Madeline Alhamra were able to convert goals from shots just outside the goal box.
Alabama State (0-5-0) was held to two total shots with
Mooregan Elder and Janae Brown each recording an attempt. Gianna Guyot faced seven shots on goal, making one save and a couple of blocks for the Lady Hornets.
Alabama State returns to action Sunday on the road against Auburn, with the match beginning 6 pm. The game can be seen
